NEW DELHI: Even if the entire country is in a state of lockdown for the next 21 days, the supply for essentials is not going to get affected. Just before PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation, e-commerce giant Amazon announced that starting March 24, it is going to prioritize customers with most urgent needs while also ensuring the safety of its associates.
Amazon India’s global senior VP and country head Amit Agarwal announced on Twitter, “To serve our customers' most urgent needs while also ensuring the safety of our associates, we are prioritizing (with immediate effect) all our resources to serve products that are currently high priority. Till further notice, Amazon India will prioritize its available fulfillment and logistics capacity to deliver products that it categorizes currently as important. There are five categories:
- Household staples
- Packaged food
- Health care
- Hygiene
- Personal safety
For all products that do not come under these 5 categories, Amazon will stop taking orders and disable shipments for lower-priority products.
Amazon also said that it is contacting all those customers whose orders are currently pending and those with lower-priority products are being given a choice to cancel their orders and get a refund (for prepaid items).
“These changes are in effect from 24th March 2020, and we will update when we resume normal operations. We will follow all Centre and State Government guidance on this. We continue to work with concerned government authorities to ensure on-ground support that will enable us to offer a more expanded selection to fulfill customer needs,” said Amazon in a blog post on its website.
